Score Still Unsettled

TREDYFFRIN — It’s going to take a fifth game, possibly in the state tournament, for Ridley and Conestoga to settle their score.

Right now the better team is the Green Raiders, who Friday night survived a controversial finish to defeat the Pioneers, 36-34, in the quarterfinal round of the Class AAAA District One basketball tournament.

The ninth-seeded Green Raiders (22-5) take on Plymouth Whitemarsh in the semifinals Wednesday night at Temple University.

Though the season series between Ridley and Conestoga is even, the Green Raiders have prevailed in the last two games, including the Central League title game. They controlled the first half of the quarterfinal and were up to the task of rallying down the homestretch to pull it off.

Looking to Move On

RIDLEY — Ticking down to what he hopes aren’t the last 48 minutes of his high school lacrosse career, there’s no need for Nolan Fox to mince words.

The senior midfielder has seen his Ridley squads make the District One Tournament in each of his four seasons. In the three previous instances, he has watched them bow out in the second round.

Ridley's Nolan Fox lines up a shot on Springfield goalie James Spence during a Central League game April 21. Fox is one of a trio of senior midfielders hoping to get Ridley over the hump and past the second round of the District One Tournament for the first time in four years when it meets Radnor Thursday. On the eve of his last shot at redemption, Fox and his teammates had no reason to hide from history at practice Wednesday, not as they sought to prevent it from repeating.

Faust Stands Tall

RIDLEY — The maxim has been repeated to the point of cliché, but when Dawson Faust uttered it Thursday afternoon, it didn’t ring quite so trite…

Faust had just finished accumulating plenty of evidence to back up his point. The Ridley goalie didn’t just stop the first one or two shots. Try the first 15 hurled his way by Strath Haven in a 9-1 win by Ridley, backstopped by Faust’s 18-save masterpiece.

Ridley's Cade Heverly (26) absorbs a fierce hit from Strath Haven's Jonah Tate (42), but the Green Raiders wound up dishing out much of the punishment en route to a 9-1 victory Thursday. (Tom Kelly IV)

Keeping the Panthers off the board for the game’s first three quarters was by no means a solo effort. But Faust was the last line of defense, one who, as he volunteered, didn’t enter riding a wave of momentum after a shaky season debut in Ridley’s 20-5 win over Upper Darby Tuesday.

All that was erased shot by shot and brick by brick, as Faust helped build a wall in front of the Ridley goal…
